Hurricane Isaac

I hoped I would never have to add a new post to the hurricane category but unfortunately that’s the case.

Hurricane Isaac hit last week on the 7th anniversary of Katrina.

On the good side I have minimal damage to my property. A tree we were planning to cut down feel on a fence we were planning to replace.

However, the bad far outweighs the good. Braithwaite, which is maybe a 15 minute drive from my house, ended up with 6 – 12 feet of water. I know a lot of people in that area who have been affected. For Katrina, that area fared much better than St. Bernard did. But since this was a different type of storm and the new floodwall that goes along the St. Bernard – Plaquemines Parish border, we came out pretty good, but they did not. Some people who lived in St. Bernard moved to Braithwaite since it had less flooding for Katrina, only to suffer severe flooding again.

A tragic event like this brings out both the best and worst in people. Various relief groups have come to the area to help. Many people and local organizations have stepped up to lend a hand. Unfortunately, there have been looters, scammers, and burglars taking advantage of either storm victims in desperate need of help or the generosity of those trying to provide that help.

This is just locally. Various other places in Louisiana have also been affected. Even places that are not at risk of flooding from storm surge have had to deal with dams failing because of  too much water built up from the rain.

I have a full time job and a family to take care of. Yet, as I have been fortunate to have very little property damage from the storm, now is the time to help those in need. I just wish I could do more.
